Youth Groups and 20 Somethings

20-SOMETHINGS

The 20-somethings got together on January 4 for a fun night of Board games at the home of Martha and Ryan Halverson-Dahl, playing some rowdy games of Codenames and Apples to Apples. This is a very fun group and definitely the place you want to be if you are in your 20’s, give or take a few years. They welcome all 20-somethings who wish to join them at their monthly events. Contact Brian Crowley at 603-809 -7047 or brianqcrowley@gmail.com for more information or to be part of the Facebook chat group.

RBA

We are beginning our first fundraiser of the year – and we are asking you to collect your spare change for the next 7 weeks to help us raise money for our spring mission trip/road trip in late March to the coast of Maine. The decorated jars will be available in church this Sunday, January 20 and we will be collecting the filled jars on Sunday, March 3 (of course we will always take money any time it is offered to us!). If you would like us to deliver a jar to you or pick it up when it is filled, please call Barbara Daley at 464-5239.

This has been a great fundraiser for us in the past and we THANK YOU for supporting our efforts! We meet every Tuesday night from 6-7:30 PM and would love to have more youth in grades 6-8 join us. Please contact Tyler (491-4126; tylerrayvaughan@gmail.com or Jenna (910-709-6132; jennakaylewis1996@gmail.com) or Barbara (464-5239; bdaley@tds.net) for more information.

THE SCENE

The SCENE met on Thursday afternoon, January 17. We enjoyed our after-snack of fruit and goldfish (and Mickey Mouse) crackers brought by Jack Hebert, shared our highs and lows, talked about the real meaning of Christmas, made winter collages that you can see downstairs in the vestry, and congratulated one of our members Jack Hebert on his spelling bee win at H-D Elementary school. Our next meeting is February 21 from 3:30-5 PM and we invite any youth in grades 1-5 to join us. Please contact Jean Crowley (464-4013; jcrowley@gsinet.net or Barbara Daley (464-5239; bdaley@tds.net).

Family Promise – March 17-24

It seems like a long time since we have had Family Promise guests in the Dubben House. With the long winter hopefully behind us, it is time to shine up our hospitality skills and signup to help welcome our families.

At this point, we have several opportunities for meals, hosting and overnights What can you do to help? If you haven’t signed up to help before, most of us find it very rewarding.
As our week gets closer, we will share information about the families we will be hosting.

We will have sign up sheets at the church or you can email Barbara at bdaley@tds.net (464-5239) or Fran Charron at fcharron@ tds.net.(464-3630).

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The March gathering of Prayer Shawl will be Wednesday, March 20th, at 10:00, at my house. It is the first day of spring so hopefully the weather and driving will be good.

Everyone is invited to come and join in a morning of conversation, fellowship, goodies… and knitting, if you wish. If you want to knit, yarn, needles and instructions are all provided.
If you have any questions about the group or need directions to my house, call me, Judy Hatfield at 464-3458.

New Caring Connections Group

The Church Council’s 2020 Vision plan calls for a revitalization of a ministry to those in our congregation who are facing life challenges or transitions. The Deacons have asked Harry Morehouse to lead “Caring Connections” whose mission will be to reach out to those members and friends who would appreciate added contact and connection with Smith Church.

Harry will be seeking volunteers who would enjoy the opportunity to visit, make phone calls, or send cards as part of Caring Connections. All volunteers will be asked to attend a monthly meeting and take part in pastor led training to be a visitor.

Growth and Evangelism Committee Pot Luck and Paper Bag Skit Night

Are you looking for a creative way to spend a Friday night? The G&E committee is planning a potluck and paper bag skit night on Friday, May 10th. If you have been on our retreats, you have probably participated in paper bag skits. If you have not, you are in for a fun night!

The potluck will begin at 6 PM with our committee providing drinks and desserts. Everyone is invited! Do you have a neighbor who might enjoy a night out? Invite them to join us. We will have sign up sheets on the bulletin board at the church, but if you don’t get a chance to sign up, you are still welcome.

20-SOMETHINGS

The SCENE meeting in March was centered around a well-received meditation exercise by Jean Crowley, in addition to some active games, free time in the newly-painted nursery, a delicious snack brought by Jack Hebert, and as always, some discussion and sharing of our highs and lows. Our next meeting will be April 18 from 3:30-5 PM. Please get in touch with Jean Crowley (464-4013 or jcrowley@gsinet.net) or Barbara Daley (464-5239 or bdaley@tds.net) if you have someone in grades 1-5 who might be interested in the group.

JOYFUL NOISE

It was a pleasure to hear Joyful Noise sing in worship on March 3 with their enthusiastic singing of Rise and Shine and I’ve Got the Joy of the Lord. We are always happy to have new singers join us – please contact Barbara Daley if you are interested.

Adult Book Group – “Here If You Need Me” by Kate Braestrup

The first book chosen for the Adult Book Group is “Here If You Need Me” by Kate Braestrup. This is the powerful true story of the author’s experience as one of the first chaplains for the Maine Warden Service (The Warden Service sets up search-and-rescue missions throughout the state.)

But it is more than a simple account of the life and death stories that are involved in this kind of work. The book is woven with stories of faith, related to scripture, is full of joy, as well as sorrow, and makes for a very profound and moving read.

Come join us on the following Mondays at 6:00pm: April 29 (please read through chapter 5), May 6 (chapters 6-9), May 13 (chapters 10-14) and on May 20 (finish the book).
