Capital Campaign and Heating System Update

The heating system is all installed and working and all bills have been paid. The total cost of the system was $213,331.80…$209, 565.00 to Christenson Plumbing and Heating, a local company, which came in a little under the original estimate; $3,600.00 for the design work to Design Day Mechanical; and $166.80 for administrative costs.

The response to our Capital Campaign to raise funds toward the cost of the system has been very positive. In anticipation of the cost, the church withdrew $165,000 from its endowment fund and set a goal of the campaign to raise $125,000 to replace these funds. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed! We have received almost $90,000.00 to date! However, we still have a long way to go and hope for a lot of continued participation.

Family Promise Week November 8-15

The next host week for Family Promise is November 8-15. The two families, two moms with one child each, will be housed at St Theresa’s Church in Henniker, and we are still responsible for the meals, evening and overnight hosts for the week. We are all set for meals, but still need one evening host on Wednesday, November11 from 5-8:30 PM, and several overnight hosts (8:30 PM-7:30 AM) – one on Monday, November 9, two on Wednesday, November 11, and two on Friday, November 13.

Due to the pandemic and one move, we have lost some of our usual volunteers for this time. There are all kinds of safety procedures in place at the church – for more information about those safeguards and/or if you could fill any of those slots, please let Barbara Daley or Fran Charron know.

Smith Church is Reading

The next book on the G&E reading list is A Year of Pleasures by Elizabeth Berg. What better title for 2020 than this – don’t we all need a year of pleasures right about now! The story is about a resilient woman, Bette Nolan, who moved to a small town after the death of her husband to try to begin again. Along the way she encounters adventure, self-discovery and comes to appreciate the solace found in ordinary pleasures.

The author, Elizabeth Berg, lives in Chicago, but has a local connection having been a good friend of John Farrar, who some of you will remember from the Smith Church Men’s Chorus years ago and in fact, one day she showed up at Fuller Library with John who introduced her to the amazed library staff.

The book is available in bookstores and online. A discussion of the book, led by members of G&E, is set for Friday, December 4 at 3 PM both in the vestry and by zoom. Please send any suggestions of books to read in following months to the church office.

Children & Youth Programs

PJ’S & PIZZA

On Oct 18th from, 3-4:15 we had our first event since March. We were outside on the lawn and in the vestry. Our bible story was a lesson from Abraham and Sarah who had to wait a long time for their son, just as we have to wait a long time for many things due to the pandemic. We read Not Forever But For Now: A Story for Children about Feelings During the Pandemic, which was helpful as families struggle at times to answer children’s questions and concerns. If you are aware of families with this concern, we do have books to recommend. In November, Pj’s & Pizza will be a mailed event (minus the pizza!), and we will focus on Thanksgiving.

THE SCENE

The SCENE lucked out again for our second meeting of the year on October 15 with a beautiful, warm, and sunny afternoon. With 10 kids in attendance and staying on our socially distanced circles, we enjoyed some conversation about our quote of the month “You are always responsible for how you act, no matter how you feel” (good advice for all of us!), shared our highs and lows, played some games, had a snack (thanks to Amber Lane for providing our snack), and then took a walk picking up trash around the church lawn and Butler Park.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 19 (3:30- 4:30) and we are hoping for another glorious sunny afternoon. If you know of children in grades 1-5 who might like to join us, please let either Barbara Daley or Jean Crowley know about them – we would love to have even more new members.

Capital Campaign Update

The letters to the members and friends of Smith Church, the local Hillsboro businesses and the present and former Youth Group members have been sent. Thanks to the excellent coverage in the Concord Monitor, the Stonebridge Post and The Messenger, the community is aware of our project. We are on our way!

We’re off to a very good start with 100% of the committee making their commitment. In addition, We have received a couple of major gifts and with a $10,000.00 contribution from the Deborahs, we have $70,000.00 as of this report. Further, we have secured a loan with very favorable rates of $25,000.00 from the New Hampshire Conference, UCC.

This is just the beginning and we are optimistic that we can reach our goal of $125,000.00. If you have any questions, feel free to contact any member of the committee: Pam Cornwell; Barbara Daley; Joan DeBrine; Larry DeLacy; Doug Hatfield; Pastor Donna Vuilleumier.

Heating System Update

It is almost done! The State and local inspections have been completed and all were satisfactory. The manufacturer has reviewed the installation and things look good. The system is actually functioning now as we experience colder mornings and nights. The electrician still has cosmetic work to do before submitting his final bill. We are looking forward to warm and cozy meeting spaces for the fall and winter. We all owe a big thank you to our sexton, Keith Audette, who secured the engineering study, obtained the proposal from Christiansen Plumbing and Heating, and then provided personal oversight and attention to details as this project moved forward.

Growth & Evangelism Unveils New Walking Program

Sponsored by the G&E committee, we invite you to join us in walking, walking, walking! We have several different routes planned and our first route will be walking from Smith Church to Florida, virtually stopping to visit our friends along the way and hoping to be in Florida to virtually visit all our snowbirds in the winter to enjoy the warmer weather there. We will be keeping track on a big map of the United States downstairs in the vestry and all you have to do to participate is to keep track of the miles you walk (outdoors, indoors, on a treadmill, any way you want) and send your weekly totals to Barbara Daley (bdaley@tds.net or 603-464-5239) every Friday morning to be updated on our map.

We have many stops planned along this first route, including those on the Smith Church address list, but we are happy to add any personal stops you would like to include along the way. I know it personally motivates my walking to know I will be stopping to visit Trudy Schmid in Massachusetts, Fay Tomlinson in New Jersey, and my cousin Frankie in South Carolina so feel free to send me names and towns that you would like added to the list. The last stop in Florida before we start on our second route will be Josh Varga in Navarre, Florida and I am sure he will have lemonade and cookies for us when we get there (heads up, Josh!) The great thing about these virtual visits, we don’t have to worry if people will be home, if they are quarantined, if they didn’t have time to clean the house, or if they actually want us to visit them.

No fair logging miles you have already walked, and the starting water pistol goes off right now – so let’s all get walking!

Stewardship

The 2020 Stewardship Campaign kicks off with Charles Hambrick-Stowe preaching a Stewardship sermon on Oct 11, and we will receive our pledges on Stewardship Sunday, Nov 22. The theme this year is “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”- 1 John 4:7. The committee members are Jackie Stetser, Mike Bradley, Elizabeth Hambrick-Stowe, Nancy Shee, Bob Charron, Jean Mogan and Rev. Donna Vuilleumier. Watch for more information in your mailbox and online.

Heating System Replacement and Capital Campaign Underway

The replacement of the old steam heating system with a modern, efficient, seven-zone, hot water system is nearing completion. The new radiators look good and do not compromise the historic appearance of the church’s interior.

Following the vote at the quarterly meeting on June 28th, a Capital Campaign Committee was formed and has started its work. The committee consists of Pam Cornwell, Barbara Daley, Joan DeBrine, Larry DeLacy, Doug Hatfield, and Pastor Donna Vuilleumier.

The committee has a goal of raising at least $125,000 toward the estimated cost of $200,000. The initial funding for the project is coming from our endowment funds. Recognizing that the endowment funds are currently paying a substantial part of the church’s annual budget, the Capital Campaign funds raised will reimburse the endowment principal. After much discussion, the committee voted unanimously not to consider selling the Dubben House at this time. The committee plans to reach out to local businesses, the groups and the many individuals who use and benefit from our church, Smith Church members and friends, as well as youth group members over the years.

We will keep you up-dated on the progress and look forward to enjoying a toasty warm church this winter.

September Family Promise Week

Our next Family Promise week is September 13- September 20. As of right now, there are two families in the program. Both families are being housed in cabins at a campground in Henniker. The cabins have kitchens. Therefore, we are thinking gift cards which allow them to buy food to prepare are a good idea. However, because Henniker is close, there might be people who would like to prepare a meal and deliver it to the campground. One of the families is a Hillsboro family of a mom and 3 children.

We will be putting out an email encouraging you to either give a gift certificate or a meal. We will also accept checks and we will use the money to buy gift cards. Once again, we will not need any other help.
